Palm Oil: European Commission takes its humbug to Africa!
That is how it is with the EU Commission (EC). Empathy is the last thing on its mind. Its officials in the Office of the Environment Directorate, instead, clamber on high horses and issues diktats about palm oil cultivation through its green group surrogates. Perhaps they are so vicious because the stakes are so high! The EU’s own indigenous edible oilseed industries such as sun flower and rapeseed oils are reeling from the onslaught in the market by a hyper yielding and consequently price competitive palm oil that they have no answer to, except to resort to subterfuge and relentless campaigns premised on manufactured and false evidence!
Exposed by Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo as phony humbugs, these unscrupulous EC officials proceed to fund anti-palm oil campaigns built around creative evidence manufactured by its green group surrogates such as Greenpeace, WWF and Friends of the Earth.
In a study entitled “Taxpayer Funding, NGO Collusion and Manufactured Crises: A Case Study of Malaysia and Palm Oil,” Libertiamo points out that since 2005, the European Commission has provided nearly €5million (MYR 19.7 million) to the World Wildlife Fund and €4 million (MYR 15,8 million) to Friends of the Earth. Climate Action Network (CAN) also received nearly €1 million (MYR 3.9 million) in the past two years alone.
This is corroborated by the passing of draconian measures such as the EU RED with its clear manipulation of emission savings math to stop the world’s palm oil from being used as a biofuel!
That by itself is already a blot on the good name of some of the prominent European countries which are signatories of the WTO treaty, but what really disappoints is that Libertiamo points out that most of the anti-palm oil campaigns are based, at best, on “manufactured evidence”!
Says Libertiamo: “These green NGOs have become peddlers of half truths to drive donations and attract government largesse. And donor governments support them, in the interest of uncompetitive domestic industries…”
In fact their campaign lies are so craven and blatantly untrue that it would take your breath away! Even when their anti-palm oil campaigns are not based on lies, one can only marvel at the disproportion between the isolated incidents of environmental transgressions and the cyclonic castigation of palm oil, as if it was an industry wide problem.
The African continent, from whence palm oil originates, was never a concern for the EC as most of the palm oil was used for local consumption and so long as the African palm oil are used for domestic consumption, they were left unmolested. However, once the African nations, especially those in West Africa, have switched their focus to legitimately exploiting their land and natural resources and cultivating palm oil for export, they have begun to bear the brunt of the EC surrogates tearing their teeth into the African efforts! There is the familiar lie about deforestation and dislocation of land from the local population that the usual suspects like Greenpeace and WWF are beginning to bandy about in factually challenged Press Releases and “reports”!
Everyone expects politicians to embellish the facts, but the epic misrepresentations by these EC enabled green groups do take your breath away. It is clear that they are making things up for purely protectionist reasons!
