This iReport is part of an assignment:
Wintry weather |
Snowbird
Actually, they are eating about 60 lbs. a week, and it is very expensive. But they raise the mood, they are beautiful and their color is gorgeous. Their presence tells me winter will end in March and they will return to the North West Territories. The females have a red cap and the males have a deep red chest. They are no larger than tiny sparrows and all photos are taken with a 500mm telephoto. Any closer than 100 yards and they flee.
Beneath the snowy mantle cold and clean
The unborn grass lies waiting
For its coat to turn to green
The Snowbird sings the song
He's always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
That will bloom again in Spring.
The second photo shows a male and female Snowbird, known in Canada as the "Red Poll." I feed them on a sawn off log and with two bird feeders.
Often woodpeckers, Bluejays and Mountain Chickadees attend the feeding. Winter can be harsh here, but beautiful if you know how to look for the beauty where ever you are.
