Italian consultancy to help achieving a better future for Afghanistan
ASSAIF, the Italian Islamic finance consultancy, is engaged in a strategic contribution to the Afghanistan Rural Development Program (AREDP). The program aims to ensure the social, economic, and political welfare of rural society, especially poor and vulnerable people, through the provision of basic services, strengthening local governance, and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
ASSAIF has been tasked with the designing and implementation of sustainable products that meet the pent-up demand for financing and savings in a social environment that represents three quarters of the Afghan population and where requests for Shariah-compliance and objection to interest payment are widespread and often absolute. Furthermore, it has to ensure that potential depositors and investors are well informed about the opportunities and risks and that Islamic financing is perceived as transparent and genuine.
Within a timeframe during which the Afghan people will be taking their destiny more and more in their own hands and aiming to surmount decades of suffering that have left behind a war-torn society and countryside, the utter social, cultural and environmental relevance of ASSAIF’s endeavour becomes evident. Furthermore, it has a strategic bearing for the whole Hindu Kush area (a territory that includes Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and parts of China) due to the historical and geo-political role that Afghanistan has played in Central Asia.
Italy’s support for the development of civil society in Afghanistan is decade-long, and has spanned several sectors. A key contribution has been the reconstruction of the national judiciary system and of the juvenile justice.
