This is what happens to Dolphins that entertain you
The dolphin drive hunts in Taiji do not just end in the killing of the dolphins. Taiji is “ground zero” for international trade in live dolphins. There is money – big money – in the captive dolphin entertainment industry. Without the money the FU makes from the live trade business, it is doubtful that the Taiji FU would be able to sustain the killing of dolphins. The operation is expensive. We understand that the FU makes about $32,000 USD for each live dolphin it captures. Trained dolphins sell for much, much more. There is a direct link between the captive dolphin entertainment industry and the bloody waters of the Cove in Taiji. Supporting a live dolphin show or participating in a confined swim-with-dolphin program anywhere in the world is the same as slicing open a dolphin in Taiji. The dolphin entertainment industry drives the hunt. The killing of the dolphins follows in its wake. Well-intentioned marine mammal trainers and the dolphin-show-viewing public all have the blood of innocent dolphins on their hands.
MORE RISSO’S KILLED IN TAIJI
Friday January 11, 2013
“Once in the cove, it is quickly netted off by men in skiffs. No escape anymore. Right after that, the murderers started to cover the killing zone with tarps. They don't want the world to see their dirty little secret. Covering the cove, only means one thing...The sound of the steel rings scraping over the metal cables, meter by meter, still haunts me.
First 2 Risso's were taken captive by dolphin trainers, to spend the rest of their lives in a concrete tank, doing silly tricks for a human audience. All the other family members had to die.
Soon, the killing began by ramming a steel rod into the spinal cord, paralysing the animal, but not killing it. Then a wooden plug is jammed into the wound to stop the bleeding. No blood in the water for the world to see!! But they don't always succeed and this time, slowly the cove turned red... Then the Dolphin is tied with its tail to a skiff for transportation to the butcher house, it usually drowns. Usually….
It was all over so quickly. Only a few hours ago this dolphin family was happy and free. Now, 20 of them were slaughtered and 2 were taken captive, never to see their family and the ocean again. All because they made one mistake: They came too close to Japanese shores”.
This entire nightmare business is happening in Taiji so people can buy a ticket and take their kids to a dolphin show to watch them doing stupid tricks they would never do when they are free. Free dolphins don’t put on funny hats or jump through hoops. They do it in captivity because they are hungry. They have been forced to learn to do it so they can receive food. They are all kept hungry so that they will cooperate with the trainers. The training process is another horrible story of brutality.
It is clear that the capture of dolphins will only end when there is no more market or demand for a dolphin show. It is that simple. It is supply and demand.
Dolphins are like international citizens: they have no borders; they are roaming in the open sea, and they should be left there. The Japanese Fishermen’s Union in Taiji have no legal right to profit from captive dolphins, and our job is to stop them by helping educate people and asking people DO NOT buy a ticket to see captive marine mammals, whether it be in a show, a petting pool, or a swim-with-dolphins program.
Say no to captivity- the ocean is the ONLY place that we should ever see marine wildlife.
This Dolphin fought until death for her baby who was ripped away for a life in captivity. HELP US TO STOP THIS SLAUGHTER
