If looks could kill... So many gun control advocates cringe on the cosmetic appearance of semi-auto rifles such as the AR-15 because they look like military weapons and nonchalantly call them "assault weapons." An AR-15 is functionally no different from an M1-A, a common wooden hunting rifle that no one would blink at. Rather, an M-16 is a full-auto assault rifle, which is a machine gun. These firearms are illegal everywhere. Period. Yet, these firearms are still used by criminals throughout the nation. How do they get these firearms? That is the question we need to ask ourselves. Criminals, by very definition, do not follow the law. Passing stricter gun control laws will only inhibit the law-abiding citizens and not the criminals. Criminals always find a way. Our nation should not be discussing how to disarm our law-abiding citizens, especially in an era of higher violent crime and lower recession-era law enforcement budgets. Who is going to protect the unarmed law-abiding citizen? Law enforcement primarily serves to investigate a crime after-the-fact, not prevention. A lot can happen in the 2 to 30 minutes it takes for law enforcement to respond to a 911 call. An AR-15 can be the difference between law enforcement cleaning up a victim's body or a perpetrator's body, not to mention cheaper for our legal system.
