    Indian Men 'Skirt' the Issue of Sexual Violence in India

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter Meera Vijayann says, "as one of the many young women in India, who works in a metropolis, I felt it was necessary to talk about the issue of sexual violence and rape because it is something that Indian women face everyday. Indian society also doesn't seem to recognise violence against women as a matter of great importance. This needs to change."

    All of us here in India are anxious to see how this case will develop. There are several other reports that have surfaced regarding rapes around the country as well; another woman in Punjab was raped while travelling by bus, a school girl was raped in her school premises in Goa, another woman was raped and hung from a tree in Bihar. There are a string of sexual assaults that are slowing being highlighted by the media.

    It seems that a large number of people are caught between ideas of regressive conservatism, and aggressive feminism. Unfortunately, the solution to sexual violence cannot be found in radical ideology. On this note, it was refreshing to see a number of men coming forward to fight for women's rights and discuss gender issues here in India. The 'Skirt the Issue' protest was light-hearted, yet carried a powerful message about gender stereotypes.
