Hunting vs Ecotourism in Africa
Zambia has announced that it will ban the hunting of big cats. The government has decided that big cats are worth more alive than dead.
Recently Botswana’s president Ian Khama also announced a decision to ban all trophy hunting from 2014. Both Zambia and Botswana plan to focus on tourism rather than hunting. This is great news for wildlife species that have been decimated by trophy hunting.
Is this the new trend for Africa? I certainly hope so. Last year I visited Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. There was a pride of 4 lions that used to be a pride of 16. The lions were safe in the reserve but every time the lions leave the safety of the reserve a hunter legally kills it. This has devastating consequences to a lion pride, especially if it’s a pride male that is killed. According to wildlife film makers Dereck and Beverly Joubert up to 20 lions die as a result of a pride male being killed.
The US alone imports about 550 lion trophies a year!
All I can say is well done to Zambia and Botswana!!!!
Please help protect these animals. Please support wildlife tourism!
