Obama’s next four years |
How Obama can make his second term historic
There are many challenges that will have to be faced by President Barack Obama during his next term in office. With gun control, the fiscal cliff, Obamacare, the economy, and the mountain of social issues that this country faces, it will be difficult to put our country on the right path. Trying to successfully address all these issues would be difficult for any president, however, it will be more difficult with a Congress that is deeply divided with the lowest approval rating in history. I believe the answer could solve multiple problems.
The Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 championed by President Eisenhower not only created infrastructure for our vehicles but made travel to various parts of the country easier. If President Obama were to take the same idea for the Information Superhighway, it could not only create jobs and give our economy a much needed boost while increasing access to education and information..
Creating a reliable infrastructure for technology that is becoming essential in our lives could boost income to the government while creating jobs for millions. Fiber optic lines that could run across the country would provide access to information and education to lower income environments as well as reliable connections that would be available from anywhere the system was ran.
While some internet service providers may claim this to destroy their businesses, it would actually help them.
One of the largest expenses of maintaining a communication system is construction. While cable companies are able to provide fast connections to servers across the world, obtaining service can be a nightmare for some residents. Even if hard cable is ran to the area, a resident must live within a certain distance to the lines in order to get reliable service, usually around 250 feet. By helping create a nationwide network, ISPs could be able to lower prices for services, while hiring more workers to help install, maintain, and troubleshoot the network.
In 1908, the Model T helped bring reliable travel to people all over the world. 48 years later, the interstate project solidified that ability. Many of the founding protocols for the internet were created in the 1960s. We have the opportunity to show the world why we are a great nation by pioneering a world that is interconnected.
