Japan, Thailand in Security and Economic Focus

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had agreed to strengthen the economy of both countries. The Japanese premier had also discussed security ties during a visit to Southeast Asia, aimed at reinforcing collaborative efforts.

Abe, making his first overseas trip since taking office in December, said on Thursday he and Prime Minister Yingluck agreed to a coordination framework to solve regional challenges, including in East Asia.

Abe's trip is the first official visit by a Japanese prime minister to Thailand in 11 years.

Thailand is Abe's second stop in the three-country Southeast Asian tour, which began in Vietnam and ends in Indonesia on Saturday. Japan is Thailand's biggest trading partner.

South East Asia is gaining in importance as Japanese investors seek to balance risks from their investments in China.
