During his time away, he spent most of his free time learning; he earned his GED within the first two months of prison. He later earn an associates degree in HealthCare Management, an extra 12 college credits hours from Ohio University in Business Management Technology and 12,000 hours in managment apprenticeships from the U.S. Dept of Labor.
His most valued accomplishment, however, is learning to read, write, speak, understand and interpret Spanish. From January of 2006 to September of 2008, he denied himself the pleasure of watching any English speaking program. He only stopped because he was moved into another unit that didn't have a Spanish TV. It was in the heat of the Presidential campaigns and CNN was on 24/7. CNN was the first English program that he had watched since his journey to learn Spanish.
This man was incarcerated on 12/30/2003 and was released on 10/11/2012. He started a business to help promote and express love and unity through out the world, WORDHEARTS, LLC.
He now works at Krystals while he builds his business. He championed discipline before and during his prison term and is finally making some steps to becoming "ideal" again.
That man is me, Alexis Heath...
I was in Federal Medical Center Lexington Kentucky where President Obama doesn't have too many fans. When he was elected, I had let fellow inmates see me cry for the first time; most of my political associates either cried because he won because they agree with his vision or because they wanted McCain to win.
When President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. It was election night all over again for us. I felt inspired to do something for the President. I drew him a WORDHEART collage. WORDHEARTS are words morphed into unique heart designs. Back then I didn't have a name for them but I only drew them for very close friends and family. I started draing them in middle school. After I drew it for him, I took a picture of it, and then mailed the original to the White House. I know he didn't recieve it because I learned later of the Secret Services process that would stop it first.
I was hoping that CNN would make sure he saw it. It says, "OBAMA" but I titled it " MR, PREZ .. I have made many more since then..
