Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, though the act predated the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by 15 years.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986.
At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
Yewande Austin is an ambassador and historian of African American-inspired music and culture. From the Negro spirituals sung on the plantations to the hip-hop that blasts out of automobiles today, she covers all genres of 'Soul Music, and offered bits of information in between.
Did you know President Obama is not the first African American to take office? There have been six presidents in U.S. history with African blood running through them.
So in a city that initially had less than a 5% minority student body at South Gwinnett High, in 1975, will celebrate MLK Day with its new racial diverse community. As an attempt to lead other Georgia cities to embrace rather than ignore, the power of unity by expressing the value of every city citizen, no matter the color of their skin, for this day is for every American regardless of their skin hue.
"Whites, Hispanics, Asians and Blacks, the day is about Celebration...Celebration...Celebration...For everyone !", exclaims Mr. Tom Livsey , OurTown National News Editor.
The group will leave at 11 a.m. on Jan. 21 at New Jerusalem; the city is invited to line up at 10:45. The parade will stretch from the church, located at 1958 Dogwood Road, to City Hall. (You can park at either City Hall or Texas Roadhouse and a shuttle will take you to where you need to go.
