    Westboro Baptist Church: I'm Sorry

I am not a theologian, an activist, an atheist or an ultra religious nut. I’m no scholar or life expert and certainly don’t pretend to have all if even any of the answers. I am a person, a simple human being that slowly ticks along in this thing called life. I’m just as easily amused and I am angered and like everyone else am probably a bit too opinionated.

I have watched you for approximately the past two years, and I have to tell you that you have made me extremely angry. You have lowered me to a level where I have openly cast you aside as fanatic heathens and said horrible things about you. I am writing this letter to say that I am sorry, because I have hated you, and that is wrong.

I admire several of your traits. I admire your passion, your willingness to stand up in the face of controversy no matter the cost. I admire that you stand firmly in what you believe in against a world that despises you and wouldn’t think twice about being martyred if you felt that it would have a favorable impact on what you perceive is the way the truth and the life.

I am a sinner, I can’t deny it, and if there is such a thing as a burning fiery pit of hell I’m likely destined to become a permanent resident.

I have my beliefs. I believe that God is a loving God. I believe that God is caring and emotional, just like his children, and I believe that God hurts when we stray from his will. I also believe that God is forgiving and full of grace. I believe that at some point we are all prodigals, lost and confused and he waits patiently for us to come home. If God didn’t love us so much he wouldn’t allow us to have the undeniable free will that we enjoy.

You believe that God is full of wrath, that he hates us all and we are all simply doomed. I’m sure that somewhere in the bible it tells us to spread his word, but is hate the word to spread?

Clearly, I like most, struggle with your theology, but that doesn’t give me the right to hate you or put down what you believe in.

I’m writing this letter because I would like some answers. It’s clear to me that you are well versed on scripture and it’s abundantly clear that you whole heartedly believe in what you preach. So I have questions, legitimate questions that I would love for you to answer.

    How can I be saved?

You say that we are doomed, that we are sinners and out of love for us you have to tell us that we are going to hell. What you don’t tell us is how we can be saved. What is it that we can do to glorify the kingdom of God?

There is so much focus on your signs and protests, but little focus on why and what. I would like to pull back the curtains of hate and discover what it is that you really want us to hear.

Westboro, my hatred for you has ended and my heart is open, I want to receive your message and process it for myself, as God clearly intended in his scripture. You have an open audience in me and I hope that when you pray, you pray for me too.

I only hope that one day I can be as passionate as you in my own beliefs, and if you can help me get closer to that, please do, you’re more than welcome. I have love for you, genuine compassionate love, and I wish you the very best. I’m sorry for the terrible things I have said, please forgive me.
