Bob Jones University under sexual abuse investigation
Bob Jones University under comprehensive independent investigation concerning handling of sexual abuse
Nine months after student protester Christopher Peterman was expelled, Bob Jones University is under independent investigation by the organization Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment (G.R.A.C.E.).
In December 2011, Christopher Peterman organized the first student-led protest in the university’s history. The goal was to remove Board of Trustees member Pastor Chuck Phelps, who failed to take proper measures in reporting a child rapist in his New Hampshire church (see ABC’s 20/20 episode Shattered Faith, 4/8/2011 http://abcnews.go.com/2020/video/scarred-childhood-13334532). After Phelps resigned from BJU’s Board a few days before the scheduled protest, the group’s focus shifted to raising awareness of sexual abuse allegations, a topic that had emerged in the wake of the New Hampshire trial.
Facing mounting pressure from Do Right BJU, alumni, former faculty, staff and students, the university announced in November 2012 that it had hired G.R.A.C.E. to conduct an independent investigation into numerous allegations of sexual abuse.
According to G.RA.C.E. founder and executive director Basyle Tchividjian “GRACE was recently asked by Bob Jones University to investigate any and all complaints made to representatives of Bob Jones University or Bob Jones Academy related to sexual abuse. This independent investigation commenced on January 10, 2013.”
To date, other than a link on its main web portal entitled “independent review” on its website, Bob Jones University has not contacted any faculty, staff, current or former students, or alumni to inform them of this investigation.
