South Africa’s ANC Government Strips Citizens of Birthright Citizenship – No “Rainbow” Nation
The action by the ruling ANC Government is in clear violation of the South African Constitution and is being done as retribution for South Africa’s brain drain. The standard response from the South African Government is that any person who wants to apply for citizenship in another country must apply to the Minister of Home Affairs to retain his or her South African citizenship before acquiring the citizenship of the other country. However they do not alert South African citizens prior to this action, and strip the citizens of their citizenship when they apply to renew their passports or Identity documents.
The current government appears adamant to maintain this policy in stripping birthright citizenship in an extraordinary violation of the South African Constitution. Section 20: no citizen may be deprived of citizenship.
South Africa's Home Affairs Minister has indicated an unwillingness to stop the action and has directed South Africa's Embassies and Consulates abroad to strictly enforce the stripping of birthright citizenship of all South African citizens who became citizens of another country after 1995. This action is a violation of South Africa's Constitution (Section 20: no citizen may be deprived of citizenship.) and it is hoped by those deprived of their birthright citizenship that legal scholars and academics challenge the actions in the courts to stop the actions of a government bent on retribution against natural born South Africans residing abroad.
