    What Would You Do?

I watched part of HLN's new show "What Would You Do?" and enjoyed it. It's a show where they set up secret cameras in public places and have actors create scenarios that highlight the bad side of the human condition. Then they watch unsuspecting witnesses' reactions. It's very enlightening and I found it entertaining.

A young University of ID student got drunk this past holiday weekend and got separated from his friends. He wandered off into the cold night and apparently got disoriented. It is very cold up here in the NorthWest and he ended up far from his campus. He knocked on some doors and was told to leave the properties. Someone told him to go next door. He knocked on that door but everyone was asleep. He died from exposure and alcohol, apparently.

Last week a young friend of mine showed up at my door in the middle of the day. His eyes were glassy and teary. He looked bedraggled. He said he was cold. I told him he looked wasted. He denied it. I lost my temper. I told him to go find a warming center or go to the library if he was cold but don't ever show up at my home when he was wasted. He again denied that he was but then asked me for food. ugh. I gave him $5 and told him not to come back until he cleaned up his act.

I felt horrible afterwards. I was angry at him for making me feel guilty. But what if he left and then something bad happened? How could I live with that?

I guess I am trying to rationalize my unwillingness to help my young friend. I've tried to give him counsel in the past. It's beyond my abilities to help him. At least it seems that way to me.

    What would you do?

I couldn't find the photo I wanted so I chose one at random. Can anyone identify it?
