CNN PRODUCER NOTE     These haunting composite images of Dutch marines taken before, during and after their deployment in Afghanistan was envisaged and captured by photojournalist Claire Felicie several years ago. "My own son Tristan, who became a marine in 2008, inspired me to take these pictures," she said. "I was very afraid that he would go to war in Afghanistan. Fortunately, for me, he didn't go, but his best friend at that time, Dominique, did go, and when he told me about it, I was wondering if something of the war experience would be noticeable on his face." While she prefers to leave it to the audience to decide how the war has impacted their faces, she says she did notice changes in the young men each time she met them. "Before they went, they were excited and there was a lot of joking around," she said. "In Uruzgan [Afghanistan] they were much more serious, because only six weeks earlier two of their comrades were killed in an IED attack and they all had witnessed the event. When I did the last shoot, they were also more quiet, and not so boyish anymore."
