    Life in China

China authorities are more tolerant than USA

I have watched Chinese people get into heated arguments with authorities in China. After a man crashed his car into another, and it was clearly his fault (he rear-ended another vehicle), he was yelling at the policeman who came to the scene. The policeman yelled back, but did nothing.

I saw another man screaming at Chinese Customs officials as he was going through Passport Control at Shanghai's Pudong airport. No arrests, no real response from the Chinese police.

Surprisingly to me, the authorities in both cases did not arrest or even get angry with the Chinese citizens that were doing the arguing. That would never fly in America.

Tonight was the most extreme example however. A visibly intoxicated and belligerant man waiting to board Delta flight 180 from Shanghai to Detroit was originally told he could not board due to his behavior. But he argued enough with the Chinese gate agents that they let him on the plane. Right after take off, the flight attendants kept announcing that passengers need to stay in their seats while we were climbing to a cruising altitude. Within a few more seconds, the captain made his way to the back of the plane. The next thing I know, we were making an unscheduled landing in Osaka, Japan to drop off an unruly passenger. After speaking with some of the flight attendants, I learned that the drunken Chinese man had actually punched one of the Delta flight attendants as he tried to force his way to the toilet.

The video shows him being escorted off the plane in Osaka with his wrists zip-tied together behind his back. We had to dump 186,000 lbs of fuel in the ocean in order to land in Osaka, and then re-fuel before taking off again.

I hope the Chinese people realize that USA authorities are a lot less tolerant of this kind of behavior.
