    CNN Student News Shoutout Dedications

Class Turns in 100% Assignments for the Entire Semester!

    Dear CNN Student News:

I have been a teacher and coach for 33 years. I work in both special education and general education classes but am a special education teacher by certification. I am writing today to brag about my 7th period Instructional US History class. The class is predominantly made up of sophomores who are classified as learning disabled. Our first semester just concluded today, January 16th, 2013 and the first day was August 25, 2012. I am writing to inform you that throughout the entire semester I have had 100% of assignments turned in! That includes a total of 539 assignments (some were done in class, some were tests or quizzes) but out of the entire semester, everything has been completed. All 16 students (couple have been moved in or transferred out) turned in every one of their assignments. In all my years as a teacher, this has never happened and can’t think of any class here at our high school that has had this much success in turning the work in. All of the current 13 students earned A’s or B’s for the semester. Throughout the semester, their pride continued to motivate them to turn in all their work. This is my last year teaching as I am set to retire at the end of this school year. This class is at the end of my teaching day and might be the literally the last kids I teach in my career. Not to put one group of kids over any others, I do wonder how this has worked out for me to have such great/motivated students in my last year and last period of the day! Their success is all on them not on me. I am merely enjoying the fruits of their hard work and think their success should be considered for your CNN Student News “Shout Out” program.

    Thank you,

    Jay Baum
