    Ask Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Are nootropics (brain vitamins) safe and or effective?

I am considering trying a nootropic, specifically Alpha Brain, by Onnit Labs. It claims to improve mental acuity and create lucid dreams (a potential bonus, but not my primary goal) in many who take it. I am a successful electrical engineer, but am always interested in boosting my brain's performance in any safe way that I can. What do you know of nootropics, in general, and of Alpha Brain, specifically? Are these types of vitamins effective? Are they safe? What type of risks may accompany their consumption by a healthy thirty-five year old male? Is there any chance they are worth their $35/bottle price? Thanks!
