NRA: Absolute Nonsense
In his inaugural address, President Obama stated, "We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate."
On Tuesday, at the Weatherby Foundation’s International Hunting and Conservation Awards in Reno, Nevada, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre, snarled, "When absolutes are abandoned for principles, the U.S. Constitution becomes a blank slate for anyone's graffiti."
I see. So the Constitution is not about principles, but rather, absolutes. I’d argue that if that indeed were the case- that the Constitution is absolute, then the amendments (explanations, clarifications, additions- call them what you will) could be considered anathema to the original. The Bill of Rights and the other amendments mere vandalism to be painted over, according to LaPierre.
Imagine no right to speek freely, to keep and bear arms, no emancipation for our African-American brothers and sisters, no vote for women and LaPierre’s worst paranoid fear, President Obama running for and winning a third term. Hell, make it a fourth or a fifth- take that FDR!
It’s the same old, same old from the NRA leadership. That registering guns is the first step to seizing them, that assault rifles and high capacity mags, no matter how ferocious, are somehow guaranteed under the Constitution. They’re not.
I’d put a cautionary warning out to the rank and file of the NRA. Your leadership is leading you to the ragged fringe of social acceptability. Their preposterous proposals, vile attacks, and the lack of a basic understanding of the Constitution do not make them worthy of following.
