Deadly fire at nightclub in Brazil.
This video can be disturbing to some viewers.
A deadly fire broke out at a nightclub in Brazil, in the city of Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil.
As news broke out on TV, grandparents, mothers and fathers, tried desperately to contact their loved ones by phone. Many cell phones found by emergency responders had over 50 missed calls on them.
A night of terror that took the lives of more than 200 people, most of whom were college students between the ages of 18 to 28 years old.
The second greatest fire tragedy in the country. The deadliest one occurred in 1961 when the Gran Circo at Niterói City, in Rio, was arsoned by a former employee who held a grudge against his former employer.
That fire took the lives of 323 people. Adilson Marcelino Alves, a disgruntled employee, and two accomplices, were later arrested.
Last night's fire is said to have been caused by a member of the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, who set off a flare in the crowd causing panic and chaos.
Over one thousand people were inside. One of every 4 lost their lives.
It is believed that almost half of the young boys and girls died of massive internal injuries caused by a stampede of people who tried desperately to exit the building by using their instincts since emergency exit signs were either confusing, or not available.
On top of all that, security personnel blocked all exits because they thought a brawl had caused the chaos and that some people were trying to take advantage of it to avoid paying their tabs.
Brazilian nightclubs will give you a stub with empty plots. As you drink and eat the slots will be marked in ink by the waitress. You pay when you leave. Some people take advantage of this and leave without paying.
This band Gurizada Fandangueira, is a small-time band now infamous for having caused this horrible deadly fire.
