    Finding a Niche and Loving It

    I was trying to sell dog houses I make, and I met a wonderful woman who commissioned me to make a tack trunk for her thoroughbred. She found a picture of one online and sent it to me. I didn't have plans, so I kind of created as I went along. It took me six days, including an all-nighter. (The only break I had was a day when I worked an extra for "Army Wives.") I had more fun making this, and though I have never met the "customer," we have formed a partnership. She will sell the trunks and I'll make them. That suits me fine. I have experienced that when you cannot find a job in your career (mine was journalism, PR, etc.), then you have to do something else. It is refreshing that people still need custom made things. Honestly, I have never enjoyed anything like I've enjoyed making things with wood. And if I could earn a living doing it, then I feel I have arrived to Nirvana.

    (The prototype I made for my project partner, who is a big-time commercial realtor here in Charleston, SC, is the one shown in the Craigslist ad. Search Craigslist for "Tackkaddy." Maybe someone out there needs one of these.)
