A "Path of Gold" for 1,128 Monks in Thailand

A new year means a new opportunity for something amazing. From January 2-27, 2013 there was a pilgrimage of 1,128 monks walking through 7 provinces of Thailand in 26 days totaling in 446km. The whole path was paved with golden Marigold flowers.

During the 26 days, thousands of people from all over Thailand and different countries around the world sat on the side of the street in the hot weather to welcome these monks as they walked by. This is something that is rare because not often are there over a thousand monks walking in front of businesses, factories, companies, homes, and various landmarks in Thailand. One landmark for example was Buddhamonthon, which is also known as the Buddhist Park, a place where many important Buddhist Ceremonies are held. It was such a pretty site to see the place around the standing Buddha statue lit up with candle light.

With Thailand's prominent religion being Buddhism, it is important to show those who have lost faith or are too busy with their lives that Buddhism is strong and is still flourishing like it was during the time of the Lord Buddha. Not only did this pilgrimage made people living in Thailand aware that Buddhism is still strong, but it also showed tourist visiting from other countries how beautiful the Thai culture is and how much respect Thai people actually have towards Buddhism.

It was such an amazing activity witness and to participate in because I got to see different types of people everyday that came out to welcome the monks. It definitely was a life changing experience because it made me see how something peaceful like the monks walking can create unity among different types of people no matter the age, gender, religion, or background.
