Cherry Blossom Festivals in Okinawa Japan

When asking those who have lived in Okinawa what you should do during your time on the island Cherry Blossom Festivals almost always makes it onto the list. The blooming of these flowers happens every year in late winter, early spring throughout the island bringing out the masses to witness the beauty of these small prink flowers.

Once attending one of these festivals it is no surprise why they are on many people's "must see" list. The small delicate flowers are picture perfect. Birds and bees can't help themselves from the tasty nectar and even seem to post for the camera. If you're lucky you may even see one of Okinawa's large batts having a snack.

Those who want to enjoy the blossoms can do so any time during the blooming season, however, the highlight of the season for many are the cherry blossom festivals, or sakura matsuri. There are two major sakura matsuri here in Okinawa which are well known among tourists; Nago Cherry Blossom Festival and Yaedak Cherry Blossom Festival. There is also a relatively new festival which takes place at the Nakijin Castle Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northern Okinawa. Each festival offers a little something different for visitors.
