Challenger Remembered -- John Denver’s contributions

Singer and song-writer, John Denver, was an active supporter of space exploration. He witnessed the Apollo/Soyuz 1, Apollo/Soyuz 2, and STS-1 launches. He was involved in many aspects of space exploration education for which he received the NASA Medal for Public Service in 1985. He took and passed the NASA physical examination required for physical and mental fitness for space travel. He became a major proponent of the “first civilian in space” concept. He was a finalist for a possible space flight as first Citizen in Space on the Space Shuttle in 1986 but he was unable to take advantage of the opportunity. While in space, he would have written a song.

After the Challenger tragedy with teacher, Christa McAuliffe, on board, John dedicated his song “Flying for Me” to all of the astronauts. It was part of the Challenger: The Mission Continues music album CD. As part of the Challenger legacy, John joined the Challenger Center Board of Directors.
