First-Time Visitor Astounded by Beijing Smog

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     American lawyer infinitejeff witnessed -- and felt -- the suffocating smog that is currently blanketing much of the Chinese capital, Beijing, while on a work trip to the country. These images were taken in the comfort of his hotel room, but outside was a different story. "I could feel the grit in my eyes and, after a while outdoors, a burning sensation in my chest -- [it was] very unpleasant," he said. "A lot of people on the street were wearing face masks. It was among the first topics of conversation with everyone I met -– both locals and visitors." Flights were cancelled due to poor visibility as the smog enveloped the city.
