International Day of Peace |
Pinwheels for Peace for International Day of Peace
Over 500 pinwheels spun in front of the Arlington Elementary School, Indianapolis, Indiana, a day after the International Day of Peace, September 22, as part of the Pinwheels for Peace movement allowing students to express their feelings about what is going on in the world and in their lives.
In 2008 it is expected that over one million pinwheels will spin in over 2,500 locations, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America.
A project for art teachers, the Pinwheels for Peace was started in 2005 by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillian, two art teachers from Florida. Ayers and McMillan state that the project is non-political; peace doesn't necessarily have to be associated with the conflict of war; it can be related to violence and intolerance in our daily lives or to peace of mind.
The Arlington Elementary School students reserved one side of the pinwheel for their description of what peace means to them.
