70 year lady shot as she was trying to escape

The security services and South African Police in a small town on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal South Africa caught and arrested 6 suspects

A 67-year-old woman was shot and badly wounded during a house robbery in Erskine Street, Scottburgh last Sunday afternoon. Police said the woman, Norma Mocke, was attacked by three men who entered her home by forcing open the kitchen window and removing the burglar guards.

A source said Mrs Mocke tried desperately to escape by jumping over her balcony, breaking her ankle and injuring her shoulder in the process. He added that Mrs Mocke was offered refuge by another woman living on the premises, but the intruders found the women and threatened them with a firearm. It was then that Mrs Mocke was shot in the back of her right shoulder and, according to police, the bullet exited through her mouth. She was taken to hospital where her condition was described as ‘serious’. Mrs Mocke underwent surgery on her jawon Monday and her condition is today described as ‘okay’.

The residents of the town of Scottburgh are up in arms at this senseless shooting and showed a presence at the suspects court appearance on Friday 1 February 2013. Bail hearing is set for 6 February 2013 and a large crowd of Scottburgh residents are expected to attended to show their unity against crime. There have been more than 80 crimes reported in this area in the last month.

Although the police service try and do as much as they can they are severely understaffed and under financed and have to rely on outside security companies to help them.
