Roşia Montană’s Anniversary. 1882 years of historical documentation of the oldest mining settlement in Romania
With this occasion, Alburnus Maior, the community based NGO from Rosia Montana, together with Bucharest Association and Re.Generation organize on the 6th of February Roşia Montană’s Anniversary, a wide cultural event in the honor of the exceptional natural and cultural heritage of Roşia Montană.
The third edition of Roşia Montană’s Anniversary will take place in more than thirty towns in Romania and abroad and will consist in a program intended to highlight the importance of protecting, preserving and valorizing the cultural heritage of Roşia Montană threatened to be destroyed by the mining project of Roşia Montană Gold Corporation.
We propose the public a selection of documentary and artistic films either about Roşia Montană, or about other similar communities from around the world that confront mining projects. The event will continue with presentations and debates about the cultural heritage of Roşia Montană, photo exhibitions, in the end, being followed by concerts. Among the films that will be projected we mention Golden Times: Black Vâlva (George Avgeropoulos, Greece, 2012), Evidences from Roşia Montană (r. Nicolae Mărgineanu, 2012), Diablo Operation (r. Stephanie Boyd, Peru, 2010) or Roşia Montană, town on the brink (Fabian Daub, Germany, 2012).
Roşia Montană is the oldest mining settlement in Romania, being historical documented 1881 years ago. The name of Alburnus Maior, the Latin name of Roşia Montană, was mentioned for the first time in the wax tablet no. XVIII, on the 6th of February 131. The wax tablets discovered in the galleries of Roşia Montană represent one of the sources of the Roman Law.
The village of Roşia Montană contains profound roots and evidences of the Romanian history, such as dozens of buildings and households declared historical monuments, a historical centre famous for the age and architecture of its buildings, a mining museum with a unique collection of ancient artifacts, memorial houses and an archeological reservation. These proofs of Romanian nation’s ethno genesis and continuity are threatened by the proposal of a mining company to develop the biggest open cast gold mine in Europe.
The Save Roşia Montană campaign represents the connection between the local opposition in Roşia Montană and the activists from all over Romania fighting against this project proposal. During 10 years of resistance, Save Roşia Montană became the biggest environmental and social campaign in Romania, enjoying the support of the Romanian Academy, ICOMOS, dozens of nongovernmental organisations, public personalities and the general public.
Roşia Montană’s Anniversary will take place in thirty towns in Romania and abroad on the 6th of February 2013. The map of the events and their programs can be followed on our website: www.ziuarosieimontane.ro
Media partners of the event: EcoMagazin, Cooperativa Urbană, Green Transylvania, Feeder.ro, Şapte Seri, Metalhead, Tilllate.com, Banana Society and Romanian Ultras.
