Naturalized citizens: Your thoughts on immigration reform |
Upto 20 years for Doctor to become citizen
Unfortunately the Red tape and meaningless country caps and yearly quotas will make it decades of daunting task to many like me.
Arrived In USA in 2001 on student visa and have done research in american university while preparing for USMLE exams required for residency. In 2004 joined residency in internal medicine and joined in primary care in 2007. At that point of time employer could sponsor the Greencard . As India can get only 7% of all employment based greencards even though it has population of 1.2 billion, there is a long line. Even though i worked as hard as doctors born in any other country many of whom have been eligible to become citizens, i am still keeping fingers crossed to get Greencard and even after getting Greencard, I ahve to wait another 5 years to become citizen.
Even though country needs primary care doctors desperately, many are caught in this meaningless , outdated policy and previous attempts to fix these have failed as many in congress didnt want to address any immigration bill except CIR
