Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters Film Review Cherry @themovies
I went to see the new fairy tale Hansel & Gretel but its not the Disney version this is definitely from the Grimms Fairy Tales that were cautionary tales to scare naughty children. Hmmm the big clue is Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters ... oh and the big guns they carry in the poster. I really liked this movie that has a fun premise of what becomes of the siblings after escaping the evil witch in the candy house. The cast gels really well and has very strong female cast that were kicking asses, taking names and holding their own! No damsels in distress in the bunch! The director has taken the premise to a delightful degree with witches from many countries, a subplot of men keeping using accusations of witchcraft against innocent independent women and the background of Hansel & Gretal was a good twist. I loved how the monsters looked but was disappointed with the lack of diversity with the speaking cast. They did have women of color as the witches but they were fleeting at best. But I still enjoyed the film and hope if they make a sequel they include POC's in the cast.
Description: In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.
Director/Writer: Tommy Wirkola
Stars: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Peter Stormare
