In 2001, we went to Guanzhou to pick up the beautiful daughter we'd been trying to adopt for two years. We had to spend 15 days in China while the paperwork was processed. One day our guides took us to a village outside the big city, with its McDonald's and over-crowded apartments, to show us the "real" China. It was a beautiful but old village. The houses had stone floors and handmade brooms and furniture. The people were kind and invited us in. This is one picture I took as we passed beside an open doorway...
