    Carnevale di Venezia Photos

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     U.S. army sergeant nicktlloyd captured these beautiful images of Venice's Carnival, a festival held before the Christian period of Lent in the romantic Italian city where parties are held in streets and private homes. "The atmosphere is mysterious and romantic, but also jovial," he said. "[It] incorporates aspects of a circus like atmosphere and participants are encouraged to eat, drink and enjoy the colors and traditions of Venice."

    This iReport was featured in the February iReport for CNN program on CNN International. His first photo was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for February 12, 2013.

    Carnevale di Venezia was in full swing over the weekend with many revelers dressing up extravagantly. Piazza San Marco was alive with thousands of onlookers for such events as the Flight of the Angel and a costume contest at the far end of the square. All photos by Nick Lloyd taken with a Nikon D800.
