Quick tips for quick and easy meals

While gourmet cooking is such a pleasure to practice and share with the whole family, sometimes the home cook would just as well make something quick and easy. Elegant, sophisticated meals complete with fine china, silverware, heirloom glasses, candle holders and French placemats are meant for special occasions. These meals take a little more thought and preparation, as well as time, to execute. The results are always memorable. But on regular days, the home cook’s reward are quick and easy recipes.

The value of a quick and easy recipe revolves around the ease of preparation. For the cook, that is such a big plus. After all, it’s hard standing in front of the stove top about half the day, preparing multiple dishes for lunch and then dinner. For the diners (which means the whole family), it also means they get something delicious without too much of the fuss and the wait of elaborate dinners. They don’t have to wait for the whole day for you to finish. Dinner is ready in as little as thirty minutes. In modern times and the frenetic weekday, that is most practical for the household.

Quick cooking and preparation refers to minimal activity in the kitchen. Just chop and cook would be most advisable for quick and easy recipes of this sort. No need to pre-cook, blanch, whisk, set aside or assemble something unless that ingredient or procedure has been done the day before or early in the day.

Convenience is the key when referring to easy recipes. This does not mean convenience food (i.e. frozen meals that just need to be heated in the oven and served), although that would help too. Convenience here refers to cooking from scratch using ingredients that help speed up the process and minimize further preparation or cooking. These include ready made pasta sauces, canned cream soups, pre-sliced vegetables, cake mixes, and the like. It also means less than five fresh ingredients in the quick and easy recipe.

Of all the quick and easy recipes, perhaps slow cooking holds a special place—it’s the one method where you chop and drop the ingredients in a pot, cook it in low heat as you go about your whole day, and come home to something aromatic and tasty for dinner. So quick and easy it is.
