    Seafood can sometimes give diners the best of both worlds—it’s delicate enough to be simply cooked or accepting of strongly flavored herbs and sauces especially if it’s a meaty fish. Quick and easy seafood recipes abound for that reason. Fish, shellfish, shrimps, crabs, lobster, crawfish, squid, octopus, seaweeds—the varieties are in multitudes and the recipes, endless, versatile and delightful. Rich in proteins and fatty acids, seafood fits many a dieter’s menu as well as the average nutritional needs of a family.

     

    The best way to cook seafood should be the simplest cooking techniques like steaming with herbs wrapped around it, poaching in a cooking broth with ginger and scallions, boiling until tender and coming off the shells, or grilling over hot coals or a skillet. Grilled seafood may be shrimp, tuna, salmon, trout, and scallops. Salt and pepper should be enough to season them but marinades may also infuse more flavor.

     

    Frying also brings out the best in seafood, especially fish fillets that are breaded or battered. Crispy on the outside, tender in the inside, fried fish may come with coleslaw or wilted greens (spinach) on the side. When making tuna burgers or fish sandwiches, the fillets are usually battered and fried. Otherwise, they are mixed in a bowl as a spread with mayonnaise, herbs and cheese.

     

    Aside from breading, the fish may also be herb or potato-crusted then pan-fried. Pan-frying, which is a whole lot healthier compared to deep frying, gives the fish or any seafood just enough browning (those delicious looking grill marks) or crust before it’s cooked. A sweet glaze like maple or honey, tangy lemon butter sauce, or white béchamel may be spread on top for that extra flavor.

     

    While seafood is good on its own, quick and easy seafood recipes may also feature them as part of the dish. An example would be noodle soups and pasta dishes, where they provide flavor (as in fish stock) and meat (as in tuna pasta). Shrimp fra diavolo or seafood marinara sauce are some examples of popular pasta dishes.

     

    For a fun take on seafood, barbecue a huge fillet and serve with a special sauce. Shrimps are perfect for barbecuing also—try them as shrimp and sausage kabobs, grilled shrimp and pineapple skewers, or marinate them in a ginger-inspired sauce and pierce with mandarin oranges in a skewer. Simple fruits of the sea.
