    Have you had an abortion?

    Postabortive Mom

I became pregnant by my first husband after I'd left him. I had another baby by him who was a year old at the time. I was living with my parents. At the time, NY was the only state where abortion was legal. I was 19. My mom took me to a Lutheran minister who told me not to worry, at that stage my baby was "only a clump of cells." The only pregnancy center in our city would only take me if I left my one year old at home with my mom. My mom wanted me to abort. She wouldn't tell my dad. My ex-husband gladly sent the $. So I flew to LaGuardia & the van picked me up & took me to a hotel on Long Island. The next day, the abortion was done under general anesthesia. Before I was really awake, I was back in the van on the way back to airport.
I remarried & had another baby & never thought much about the abortion either way until about 3 years later. We weren't going to church anywhere much but I just knew in my heart, like out of the blue, that what I'd done wasn't right. It was wrong.
Looking back, I can tell that I didn't really have any "choice". No one wanted to fool with me and another one of my babies so I was pretty much intimidated into getting "it taken care of." My baby would've been 40 yrs old last yr. I'll carry her in my heart till the day I die. She had no choice & neither did I.
