CNN PRODUCER NOTE     laurenkgray says she was inspired to create a batch of snow cream after the recent northeast blizzard poured several inches of snow in her area of Stamford, Connecticut. She says snow cream is an old southern recipe that her mother passed down to her when she was younger. 'I've had it my whole life when snow was around. My mom used to always make it when I was little. It's a North Carolina tradition,' she said.

She says in order to make snow cream you need only a few ingredients, a half a cup of milk or cream, two tablespoons of sugar, two to three drops of vanilla and finally a few cups of freshly fallen snow. She says she doesn't worry about the snow being unclean or unsafe to eat. 'I just get clean snow where it hasn't been shoveled or really touched by anything else. I just use what snow is available outside,' she said.

During the snowstorm, she asked her mom to send her the recipe for snow cream. So after she decided to share this recipe after learning that many of her friends never heard about the dish. 'It's a delicious recipe that is neat to make when you cannot go out and get any sweet treats,' she said. Although the dish does not freeze well, she says you can spice it up by adding cookies and other toppings to the snow cream, 'just like ice cream,' she said.
