At an age when I was not yet able even to take care of myself, I became pregnant. The month before I had had days of flu-related vomitting that apparently included thorwing up my birth control pills. The year was 1964, the plce Knoxville, TN, and abortion was illegal. Through friends I found a man from another country, allegedly a doctor back home, who performed the procedure in my apartment. The conditions were less than antiseptic, the procedure without anesthesia or antibiotics. Still, my overwhelming emotion was gratitutde. Later I heard this same man had perferated another woman's uterus. He must have had some basic goodness in him; he dropped her off at an emergency room on his was to the airport to leave town. So many others were njot so fortunate in that era.
