Weekends in America |
Revisiting Hometown USA The Weekend before Fat Tuesday.
We spent the weekend in Knoxville Tennessee, our original home town. Walking the familiar streets down town and the old Market Square brought back lots of childhood memories. Today, unlike the days of farmers selling their livestock and farm harvests, the Square has been refurbished into an urban yuppie delight. Boutiques, animal friendly outdoor cafes, and coffee houses line the walkway. Krutch Park with its many sculptures , scenic winding creek and waterfalls offers a perfect resting area for reading or a leisurely lunch. In the distance the "Sun-sphere' from the 1982 World's Fair still stands tall on the beautiful Fairground site. She greets all who come to the downtown area.
This past weekend the city geared up for Mardi Gras. Street performers sing, dance and play musical instruments, hoping for spare change or maybe spare dollars. And, of course the King Cake calls our name as we pass the bakeries.
