The decision to resign made by pope Benedict XVI together with the Holy Spirit will remain as one of the most important measures from his papacy. The resignation doesn’t concern only himself. It is a deliberate step, which opens the doors for a new praxis in the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI has announced this thought already as a cardinal: that one day in the future a pope will resign from his papacy. With great perspicacity he recognized that the Catholic Church in this rapidly changing modern world, with its focus on self satisfaction and under the “dictatorship of relativism”, needs an energetic pope with all his physical and mental strength remaining intact. As it will probably take a long time since we have such an old pope again, he came to the conclusion that he himself must be the one who establishes this new, important praxis. This is a new, mysterious step in the pilgrimage of the Church through human history. It shows that the Holy Spirit is still governing the Catholic Church, just as Christ promised almost 2000 years ago.
