Travel snapshots: The best beaches |
A Quiet Stretch of Sand
My husband Rob and I stumbled across this island gem while hunting for durian in Lombok last February. We needed a break from our research, and a place where both of us could relax. I spent my days exploring the vastly diverse reefs hiding under the pale blue water while Rob sat in the shade of one of the little bamboo beach huts enjoying the view of Lombok's mountains across the bay. We bought bananas, papayas and coconuts from a woman who traversed the beaches with a supermarket of fruits balanced on her head. We drank pineapple juice at breakfast and slept peacefully at night, our sandy feet hanging over the edge of the bed. Mostly we enjoyed the absolute, unyielding stillness of a quiet island in a quiet sea.
