I regret lost fatherhood
In 1987, when my girlfriend told me she was pregnant, I only thought of how having another child would cause financial and personal freedom constraints on me. I expressed this in words and passivity to my girlfriend. My lack of support for my girlfriend and our preborn child were the reason she chose to have an abortion.
I did not grasp the far reaching responsibilities a man assumes when he decides to become intimate with a woman, not the least of which is the possibility of fatherhood. I didn't comprehend the joy and fulfillment children bring to their parents.
I have come to understand how selfish I was in this situation and in my life in general. I live with a deep emotional and spiritual wound as a result of taking the life of my own child. I experience great sorrow when I think of the life I ended. I miss my child.
