Denver Climate Protest
- zdan, CNN iReport producer
Joining groups across America, protesters in Denver, Colorado marched from the Tivoli Commons at the Auraria Campus, to Civic Center Park. The protest was sponsored by 350 dot org and featured a “Human Oil Spill” in which protesters, all dressed in black, laid on the ground simulating a pool of oil.
The event began at about 11:00 a.m. with the gathering of approximately 50 people on the commons. As the time grew near for the march, more people arrived and estimates put the final crown at around 1,000 people. When the group marched to Civic Center Park the line stretched almost from Auraria to the park.
Protesters were greeted by honking horns and enthusiastic waves walking down Colfax Avenue. The intent of the black clad protesters was to simulate an oil pipeline ending with a giant oil spill in the park. Protesters chanted as they walked. Among many other chants they shouted, “We don’t want no climate drama, hey, Obama.”
The group Earth Guardians lead a spirited gathering with singing and chanting. A “Go Fossil Free” rally encouraged everyone to reduce their use of gas, oil and natural gas in order to slow the saturation of carbon dioxide, which climate scientists say is causing global climate change which has already resulted in changes in weather patterns and the evacuation of two low lying oceanic nations.
