Hail Damages Plane, Forced to return
The skies continued to darken as passengers boarded LAN Flight 4027, Airbus A320 scheduled to depart from Cataratas (Iguazu Argentina) and land at Buenos Aires, Argentina. One passenger was heard to remark that the thunderstorm cells were moving in quickly and the pilots needed to get off the ground as soon as possible. But, even as the thunderstorm cells thickened, the pilots decided to take off from the airport. Bad Decision and an unwise choice!
Less than five minutes into the flight and with the plane surrounded by dark clouds, extreme turbulence hit the plane, stopped for a minute and then resumed. Passengers' screams filled the plane. And, then the plane dropped suddenly again filling the plane with gasps and screams.
For about ten minutes, the pilots tried to rise above the clouds and thunderstorm cells, but to no avail. The pilots then began to descend which further concerned knowledgeable passengers since no announcement had been made on the reason for the descent.
Finally, the cockpit announced that the flight would be returning to Cataratas / Iguazu. The reason given was a broken windshield.
