And curiously (?) there are few statistics on just how often this occurs and under what circumstances. Despite the standard set out in this article, it is more often that the standard for deployment of deadly force is that "the officer felt threatened." This seems to be rising in parallel to the increasing militarization of the police. How many people know that the "burner" tear gas grenades were a gift from the US military, along with millions of dollars of other military arms and armament? Creating a paramilitary police is a convenient way to get around the Posse Comitatus Act .
