SAFETY IS A RIGHT THAT NEITHER THE FARC NOR ITS PARTNERS CAN TAKE AWAY FROM US

SAFETY IS A RIGHT THAT NEITHER THE FARC NOR ITS PARTNERS CAN TAKE AWAY FROM US

The FARC know how to manipulate the media to their favor to set the themes of the day. Be it with terrorism or dialogue, it all has to do with how these criminals fit in the present social, political and military context of our country.

Not long ago, headlines appeared saying, "the FARC confirm they will cease kidnapping". However, shortly thereafter new headlines appeared after a soldier and two policemen were deprived of their liberty. Terror was the headline once more. Now the FARC create their own news again, saying last Sunday that they are ready to release the captives, and continue peace talks with the Colombian government. These are proceeding at a "bullet train pace", according to "Granda", one the FARC spokespersons who continue vacationing in Havana.

In the same manner, while “appropriately allocated” car bombs are still being placed as part of the terror in Colombia, the second round of the 2013 peace talks closed on the Caribbean island of Cuba. These are the fifth since the beginning of the talks last year. And again the FARC returns to "talk" on 18 February, while the entire country waits in fearful expectation.

"Granda", in the hypocritical manner that characterizes all members of the FARC, stated that, "there must be a permanent legal change while the armed confrontation continues”. He regretted that, "the government consistently refused to a bilateral cease fire," and alleged that the FARC respected a ceasefire between November 20 and January 20. In reality, the month of January had the highest number of attacks on economic infrastructure Colombia has witnessed in the last six years.

The truth would be better; that the FARC want to create media attention to force public opinion, instigating the halt of military operations. This would leave the field open at home for the FARC to recruit minors, enhance the sophistication of their explosives, weapons, and criminal intelligence networks, terrorism, and continue to do as they please.

The stall tactics of the FARC spokespersons in Cuba are working to exactly that end. They are making proposals for self-government, not with the intention of helping the “campesinos”. Instead the idea is to stop all forms of eradication of illicit crops, which of course will result in increased production and export of cocaine, filling the FARC coffers. All they are seeking is an open door.

This would certainly overflow the already full cup of Colombia´s security problems. It would increase criminal gangs and the lucrative allied drug trafficking networks of the FARC and ELN.

Both abroad and in our country, it must be made clear to the FARC that there are some rights that are non-negotiable for the Colombian people. Safety is our dignity and our right. Instead of diminishing, we need to increase the value of this right. This is a country that is growing, and proud of its people. Its military and police forces, who fight criminals and eradicate illicit crops, are not going to step aside even if the FARC keeps trying for years and years.
