Bitter pill: The cost of health care in the U.S.

    Knee-jerk reaction?

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     This iReport is part of TIME and CNN’s special report “Bitter Pill: Why medical bills are killing us.” These exact numbers are self-reported and have not been independently verified by CNN. While costs for procedures can vary widely based on the doctor, hospital, and insurance plan, these numbers are in line with average and/or typical charges.
    - rachel8, CNN iReport producer

I had my ACL reconstruced in March 2012. Outpatient procedure. On top of doctor and anesthesia bills, I received a pre-insurance bill from the hospital for $30,000!!! I was there for 6 hours. No way in hell that I utilized services in the same stratosphere as that charge. Ridiculous. Luckily I had insurance and they adjusted a whopping $23,000 from the bill. Good thing they have leverage, Joe Six-Pack not so much.
