India celebrates its Republic Day on January 26 every year. On January 29, the beating of the retreat officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. This ceremony of beating of the retreat was started in the early 1950s. You have to be there to really appreciate this unique musical treat in which bands of the three services take part, playing popular marching tunes while marching in unison. The ceremony ends just after sunset with the lights on these capitol buildings switched on.
The venue of Vijay Chowk at Raisina Hills, flanked by the North and the South Blocks with Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidents Palace) in the back drop, makes this audio visual experience a very unique one. I wish I could add the sound of the bands to these pictures.
