Two killed as passengers train rams truck
Two labourers were killed and 6 others were wounded as the Benapole bound commuter train rammed a goods truck loaded with soil at Shesh Shimana, Jessore- Khulna border at around 7:45 am on Saturday.
The accident took place while the commuter train coming from Khulna hit a truck that was crossing an unauthorized rail crossing at Shesh Shimana killing two and wounding six more labourers.
The killed were identified as Shushanta Kumar, 35 and Jamal Hossain, 36 of Magura village under Abhaynagar upazila, Jessore.
Locals said the accident took place just after the truck got on the rail track crossing an unauthorized road over the rail truck at around 7:45 am. Hearing big bang locals rushed to the spot and took part in rescue. They took M Babul, 20, Nazim Uddin, 35, Matiar Rahman, 20, Ashraful Alam, 22, Tipu, 22 and Raju, 30 Khulna Medical College with critical conditions. All the labourers hailed from Magura village.
Of the dead, Shushanta died on the spot while the other on the way to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Train communications to and from Khulna remained suspended till 9:30am due to the accident.
Shahana Akhter, a passenger of the train told New Age that the commuter train stopped suddenly soon after the incident. ‘Hue and cry of the wounded made the air of the area heavy’, she added.
Shovan Roy, stationmaster, Nawapara Railway Station told that the accident occurred as the truck used an unauthorized road across the trail track. ‘Train commutations from Khulna remained suspended for two hours’, he added.
Mamunar Rashid, officer in-charge, Phultala police station told that one of the labourers died on the spot.
