This iReport is part of an assignment:
Sound-off |
Discrimination against Mexican Americans who can't speak Spanish.
Ok...I'm sort of continuing my last post on subject matter....But in a quite different way...Still on Speaking Spanish.
Anyone who knows me on iReports knows that I live in an all Mexican American household....I'm the only hold out..
:-)
The last few years I have been personal witness to an oddity....I define it as an oddity because I can't really remember anyone or any news organization ever discussing it.
> Mexican Americans who don't speak Spanish.
PS...The friend I mentioned from the last post is not in my household.
> I've lived with two Mexican American teenagers who have been harassed by their high school academia for being Mexican and not knowing Spanish...
How so?
They took Spanish...A foreign language....When they arrived to participate in class they were told they could show up if they wanted to but didn't have to because I'm sure this class will be an easy A for you...Just show up for the language tests....The teacher said. Okayyy.
They went to class anyway.
They were called out in class during discussion...
"Ok, XXXX" (I' won't use real names here), "tell the class how this particular sentence is properly pronounced..."
She didn't know...And was made to look stupid in front of her classmates.
Why? Because she "looked" Mexican so of course she should know.
A conference was held...
So It was resolved..Right?
Not so fast...This was with the first and oldest daughter.
2 years later..Same crap all over again.
This was not a one or two time event. They both were ridiculed and treated differently the entire time they took Spanish. The most recent was just a couple months ago.
